They are fortunate to have Sabrina Goodman, Kyle’s sister, and Kristy McMahon, a close family friend to be part of the Doylestown Gold Exchange team. Greg is a Graduate Gemologist from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the gem- and jewelry-buying public through research and education in gemology and jewelry arts. Greg earned his degree through rigorous coursework and laboratory instruction involving grading and testing gems and stones. GIA is at the forefront of the industry for diamond grading, giving you access to Greg’s advanced knowledge, expertise, and passion for creating custom diamond engagement rings that dazzle.

“I love designing custom diamond engagement rings that make dreams come true. From the moment a customer walks through the door to seeing the unique showpiece come to life, I thoroughly enjoy guiding the way as the magical design process unfolds.”

Choosing a Diamond

Like snowflakes, every diamond is unique. That’s why our diamond selection process centers on openness and transparency. We share our specialized diamond knowledge and tools of the trade to ensure you know precisely the quality of each diamond. Our goal is to help you find that perfect dazzler for a custom diamond engagement ring that fits your budget.

Before we look at diamonds, we’ll educate you on the universal diamond grading system called the 4Cs of diamond quality.

  1. Color– Diamonds that appear colorless are valued higher than those with light yellow or brown shades.
  2. Clarity – Diamonds with fewer inclusions or blemishes are valued higher than those with more birthmark-like imperfections.
  3. Cut  Diamonds with cut grades that expose more fire and sparkle are valued higher than those with less brilliance.
  4. Carat weight – Diamonds with larger carat weight are valued higher than those with less carat weight.

Armed with this foundational knowledge about diamonds for custom diamond engagement rings, we’ll help you decide between a lab-grown and an earth-mined diamond.

Lab-Grown vs. Earth-Mined Diamonds

Thanks to advanced technology, our custom diamond engagement rings can include either a lab-grown diamond or a traditional earth-mined diamond. They share the same chemical, physical, and optical properties with equal durability, beauty, and brilliance. Only a laboratory-trained gemologist can distinguish between them.

  • Real diamonds
  • Often better quality than earth-mined diamonds
  • Cost up to 30% less than earth-mined diamonds
  • Get a larger diamond at a comparable price
  • Environmentally sustainable

Earth-Mined Diamonds

  • The most sought-after gemstones for centuries
  • Often contains more natural imperfections than lab-grown diamonds
  • Usually cost more than lab-grown diamonds
  • Originally formed deep in the earth and are mined from global reserves

The Custom Diamond Engagement Ring Process

We make designing custom diamond engagement rings fun and exciting! We guide you through the entire process, at your side every step of the way. In the end, you’ll have a cherished treasure that reflects your unique vision.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Diamond and Metal Selection Phase

Designing custom diamond engagement rings starts with the prized jewel at the center of it all: the diamond. Whether lab-grown (“above ground”) or earth-mind (“below-ground”), we’ll help you apply the tools of the trade to select the best quality diamond for your budget. Next, you’ll choose the type of metal you prefer, such as 14K yellow gold, 14K white gold, or platinum.

  2. Concept Phase

The fun and interactive process of designing custom diamond engagement rings continues with a meeting to determine the ring concept. Feel free to bring in photos or other examples of ring styles you or your partner likes, or you’re welcome to browse our samples for inspiration. We’ll work together to tease out the diamond cut, mounting, and other stylistic elements that make you smile. Even if it’s a new style or a unique concept, we’ll bring your ideas to life.

  3. CAD Phase

Once the diamond is chosen and the vision for your custom diamond engagement ring is set, we’ll take the concept to our shop and create a computer-aided design (CAD) file. We’ll email you the design file as an image, or you’re welcome to come in to view what your custom diamond engagement ring will look like. This phase allows plenty of room for tweaks or revisions before moving on to the next step in the design process.

  4. Wax Replica Phase

After you’ve approved the CAD drawing, we’ll take that digital image and create an exact 3D printed wax replica of your custom diamond engagement ring that you can hold and even try on. While it won’t contain any metals or stone, the wax replica gives you a sense of the size, thickness, proportions, and overall style. We can even drop the lab-grown or earth-mined diamond you chose to help you imagine how the ring will look once completed. Now is the time to make any final changes before the casting phase begins.

  5. Casting Phase

One of the last steps of designing custom diamond engagement rings is the casting phase, where we’ll cast the ring using your chosen metal. At this stage, you can review it again to ensure the width and other elements are correct before we move on to the final setting phase.

  6. Set and Finish Phase

The final stage of designing custom diamond engagement rings is to set the stones, finish, and polish to dazzle and sparkle. This part of the design process usually takes about 3 to 6 weeks. We guarantee that your custom diamond engagement ring will be a piece you’ll be proud to slip on your fiancée’s finger.
